Description

Ephedrine tablet 30mg is a sympathomimetic amine and an alkaloid frequently used as a decongestant derived from plants of the genus Ephedra (family Ephedraceae). Its salt, ephedrine hydrochloride has various uses in relation to its sympathomimetic effect.

Ephedrine tablet 30mg is used in various countries for the treatment of asthma, obesity or during surgery to maintain high blood pressure.

Pharmacology
Ephedrine tablet 30mg is a sympathomimetic amine – that is, its main mechanism of action is related to its indirect action on the adrenergic receptor system.

It potentiates the action of adrenaline.

Ephedrine tablet 30mg acts primarily as a powerful vasopressor that results in a marked rise in blood pressure. The vasopressor effect is mainly due to an indirect action. If noradrenaline stocks are depleted, its action is moderate5.

Its duration of action is 5 to 6 times that of adrenaline.

The traditional Chinese herb Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica) contains ephedrine as the main active ingredient and is used as an antiasthmatic and vasoconstrictor3. This is also true for many herbs extracted from Ephedra species.

In Western medicine, it has served as a nasal decongestant, bronchodilator and asthma, but its popularity is decreasing in the face of new, more selective substances with less negative effects. It is still used intravenously against hypotension.
